Verdant Valor Sanctuary

Developing More Roots

May has marked a significant transition for Verdant Valor Sanctuary as we move from early formation into more structured implementation and applied development. With Practicum officially underway, this month has brought increased clarity, accountability, and alignment between organizational development and academic learning objectives that directly support VVS’ long-term growth.

Practicum Launch & Applied Development Framework

Practicum has now officially begun, providing a structured framework to advance multiple dimensions of Verdant Valor Sanctuary’s development. The focus of this experience is to directly support the design and implementation of a sustainable, evidence-informed operational and program model aligned with IDD and aging populations.

Key learning objectives guiding this work include the development of a structured operational and program model, analysis of regulatory and compliance requirements (including Medicaid, licensure, and zoning considerations), and the construction of a financial sustainability framework with projected costs and revenue streams. Additional focus areas include designing a site utilization strategy for therapeutic and habilitative services, synthesizing findings into executive-level communication formats, and applying systems thinking and leadership within a nonprofit healthcare context.

These objectives are directly shaping the deliverables that will support VVS’ long-term development, including an Operational and Program Development Plan, a Regulatory and Compliance Readiness Summary, a Preliminary Financial and Sustainability Framework, a Site Utilization Concept Overview, an Executive Planning Brief, a Final Presentation, and a Reflective Report.

Land Search, Parcel Strategy & Agent Vetting

The land search process has been reactivated this month with a more structured and strategic approach. Efforts are now focused on identifying and evaluating potential parcels that align with the long-term vision for therapeutic programming, vocational opportunities, and accessible design.

In addition to revisiting property options, we are also actively vetting real estate agents to ensure alignment with the unique needs of a nonprofit development model. This includes evaluating experience with acreage, agricultural or mixed-use zoning, and familiarity with land suited for therapeutic or programmatic development. This step is critical to ensuring that future acquisitions are both financially responsible and mission-aligned.

Connect IDD Feedback & Programming Development

We continue to receive valuable input from Connect IDD regarding programming design and service structure. Their feedback has been instrumental in strengthening our understanding of best practices for IDD-focused programming, particularly in relation to accessibility, engagement strategies, and community-based support models.

These insights are directly informing how we continue refining our horticultural therapy and vocational programming concepts to ensure they are both clinically informed and practically implementable within a future site.

Operational Focus: Financial & Program Alignment

With the foundation of nonprofit status and banking now in place, our focus is increasingly shifting toward financial structure and operational readiness. This includes aligning program design with realistic cost projections, sustainability planning, and long-term funding strategy development.

This phase is centered on ensuring that the growth of VVS remains both mission-driven and financially responsible, with clear pathways for implementation that can scale appropriately over time.

Closing Reflection

May represents an important turning point for Verdant Valor Sanctuary as we move from conceptual development into structured execution. With Practicum underway, land strategy re-engaged, and program design feedback actively shaping our direction, the organization is beginning to take on clearer form and operational definition.

While much of this work remains behind the scenes, it is laying the groundwork for a sustainable, evidence-informed, and mission-aligned sanctuary model that can serve both veterans and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Looking Ahead

Our next quarterly board meeting is scheduled for July 26 at 8:00 PM. The meeting will focus on several key planning priorities, including financial projections, IRS filing preparation, tax considerations, fundraising readiness, and preliminary project cost discussions. These conversations will help guide the next phase of organizational development and support informed decision-making as we continue moving forward.

Together, we’re cultivating a future where growth—both personal and agricultural— is deeply rooted in purpose.
