Verdant Valor Sanctuary

Collaboration, Creativity & Continued Exploration

June has been a month of collaboration and exploration as the team continued refining program concepts, evaluating land opportunities, and gathering ideas to shape the future of Verdant Valor Sanctuary. From agricultural planning and marketing initiatives to site visits and environmental research, each effort has contributed to building a stronger vision for our future campus.

🌾 Agricultural Planning & Garden Development

Andrew and Josh spent time brainstorming and presenting potential crops and specialty products that could be cultivated within the sanctuary’s gardens. Their discussions focused on identifying opportunities that would support therapeutic programming, vocational training, seasonal production, and long-term sustainability. These early conversations will help guide future decisions regarding garden layout, educational programming, and potential revenue-generating opportunities.

📣 Marketing & Community Engagement

With our nonprofit banking infrastructure now established, Kilo Watts Jr. has continued developing Verdant Valor Sanctuary’s marketing strategy and exploring simple, accessible ways for supporters to donate. Efforts remain focused on expanding our presence across LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram while preparing for future fundraising and community engagement initiatives.

🏡 Campus Design & Infrastructure Planning

Melissa and Shady met in Wilmington, North Carolina, to explore ideas for future outbuildings and supporting infrastructure that could serve therapeutic, educational, and operational needs. At the same time, Melissa and James continued researching construction materials, wetland-friendly design concepts, and sustainable site layouts while walking the Greenway in Charlotte. These discussions have helped generate ideas for integrating the natural landscape into future programming while preserving the property’s ecological features.

🌿 Land Search Update

The search for Verdant Valor Sanctuary’s future home continues. This month, Melissa and Kilo toured two potential properties. One parcel near Garland, North Carolina, was ultimately ruled out because of its close proximity to a chicken processing facility, which did not align with the organization’s vision for a peaceful therapeutic environment. Another promising property in Oriental, North Carolina, was unexpectedly taken off the market before further evaluation could occur.

Although these opportunities did not move forward, the search remains active. A new relationship has also been established with a land agent specializing in Western North Carolina properties, expanding our search area and increasing opportunities to identify acreage that supports the organization’s long-term mission.

🥾 Environmental Research & Inspiration

During the final week of June, Melissa traveled to Washington State and backpacked through the Hoh National Forest with Kasey to study native vegetation, trail design, forest ecology, and natural landscape integration. The experience provided valuable inspiration for future trail systems, landscaping, and habitat preservation concepts that may be incorporated into the sanctuary’s master plan.

Photos from this trip, along with vegetation and land infrastructure ideas, have been uploaded to the Teams folder under Land Infrastructure for the board’s review and future planning discussions.

🔭 Looking Ahead

As the practicum continues, efforts will increasingly focus on financial planning, operational development, and site planning. Upcoming priorities include advancing the Operational and Program Development Plan, refining financial sustainability models, continuing land acquisition efforts, and incorporating stakeholder feedback into the overall campus design.

🌿 Closing Reflection

Every property toured, every trail explored, and every planning discussion brings Verdant Valor Sanctuary one step closer to becoming a reality. While progress isn’t always measured by immediate outcomes, each experience continues to strengthen our vision and improve our readiness to make thoughtful, mission-driven decisions. Thank you for your continued commitment and belief in what we are building together.

Together, we’re cultivating a future where growth—both personal and agricultural— is deeply rooted in purpose.
