April has been a month focused on strengthening the internal systems and planning that will support Verdant Valor Sanctuary’s long-term success. While much of this work happens behind the scenes, these efforts are critical to ensuring that the organization is positioned for responsible growth, strong governance, and sustainable programming. Our team continues to move forward steadily, building the operational, financial, and programmatic structures that will support our future mission.
Organizational Infrastructure & Financial Setup
One of the key priorities this month has been establishing our nonprofit banking infrastructure. We are pleased to share that our banking has now been approved by US Bank. This is an important milestone that will allow us to complete the charitable certificate process and formalize several financial components of the organization.
As we move toward our next board meeting, we are also beginning deeper discussions around financial projections, tax considerations, IRS filing preparation, and projected costs associated with land development and program implementation. These conversations will help ensure that our growth strategy remains financially responsible and aligned with our mission.
Program Development & Training
Program development remains a major area of focus. Work continues on drafting program manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that will guide the future structure of Verdant Valor Sanctuary’s programming. Establishing these frameworks early will help ensure that programs are consistent, safe, and aligned with best practices for supporting both veterans and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This month also included training opportunities focused on learning how to effectively use adaptive tools and techniques for individuals with IDD in garden environments. These trainings are helping inform how our horticultural therapy programming can be designed to be accessible, engaging, and therapeutic.
In addition, horticultural therapy training opportunities remain available, and these resources continue to strengthen our evidence-based approach to nature-based programming.
Land Search & Strategic Planning
Our search for land continues, though the approach is currently being regrouped to allow for more strategic planning. The team will be developing a more structured land search plan as we move into the summer months, with the goal of identifying properties that align with our long-term vision for therapeutic gardens, vocational programming, and nature-based healing spaces.
We are also excited to share that garden design, visual planning, and donor pitching preparation are among the next major priorities. These efforts will help position the organization for future fundraising conversations and project development.
Taking time to refine this strategy will help ensure that the land we eventually secure is both practical for development and supportive of the sanctuary’s mission.
Partnerships & Collaboration
Building collaborative relationships continues to be an important part of our development. In the coming weeks, we will be meeting with practicum staff as well as partners at Connect IDD to continue exploring mentorship opportunities, programming insights, and collaborative learning. These conversations help ensure that our programming model is informed by experienced professionals working within the IDD community.
Marketing & Community Visibility
Our social media presence continues to grow, helping establish early awareness for Verdant Valor Sanctuary. Activity across LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook is steadily increasing as we begin sharing more about the mission and vision behind the organization. These platforms will continue to serve as important tools for community engagement, storytelling, and future fundraising efforts.
Team Celebration
April also brought an opportunity to celebrate one of our team members. Kilo Watts Jr. celebrated his birthday on April 11. We appreciate the energy and creativity he brings to the team, particularly in helping expand Verdant Valor Sanctuary’s online presence and community engagement.
Looking Ahead
Our next quarterly board meeting is scheduled for July 19 at 9:00 PM. The meeting will focus on several key planning priorities, including financial projections, IRS filing preparation, tax considerations, fundraising readiness, and preliminary project cost discussions. These conversations will help guide the next phase of organizational development and support informed decision-making as we continue moving forward.
